EDDIE Pepperell battled through tough conditions to make the cut in the Open Championship.

The Abingdon golfer, who started on one-under and in a share of 20th, secured his place in the latter stages at Royal Portrush with a birdie at the tough 18th to finish on a one-over-par 72.

Pepperell parred the opening six holes before a birdie at the seventh moved him up the leaderboard.

However, he dropped shots at the next two holes to reach the turn on one-over for the day.

Two pars followed before a superb birdie at the 12th restored parity.

He slipped back to level par for the tournament with a bogey at the 14th and another dropped shot at the 16th left him with work to do in order to make the cut.

But he held his nerve to par the 17th before a fine birdie at the last.
