Cumnor have yet to decide whether they will accept promotion should they win The Oxford Times Cherwell League.

But captain Chris Mitty said they were not getting carried away after closing to within two points of Division 1 leaders Dinton.

Mitty also stressed that any decision would be made with the whole club in mind.

He said: “No decision has been made yet. We are having a committee meeting this Thursday and it will be something that is discussed.

“Having played there last year for Thame, we need to make sure it is the right thing for us.

“What we don’t want to do is yoyo.

“It’s really important we make sure it is the best for the club and we continue to bring the kids through.

“We have got to make sure the whole club are up for it and not just a few players.

“If we were fortunate enough to win the league, I think we would take it, but we are not there yet.”

Cumnor finished 11 points behind champions Aston Rowant in third place last year and Mitty believes they have improved since then.

They have maintained a title charge despite star all-rounder Ali Morteza and young spinner Umair Ghazali leaving to join West Indian Cavaliers in the Northamptonshire Premier League in search of professional careers.

“We should be top to be honest,” said Mitty.

“We have got quite a young side and I’m really pleased with the progress.

“We have also got three out of four teams going for promotion.”

Mitty also praised the impact of player-coach and former Oxfordshire all-rounder Adam Cook, who joined from Oxford.

One of Cumnor’s youngsters to impress this season has been 17-year-old seamer Alex Kidd, who was awarded a Brian Johnston Scholarship in April.

Mitty said: “I think we expected him to be playing in the seconds or thirds.

“He has got into the first team and done really well.

“He is a lovely lad and has been doing some coaching at the club. He is coming on really well.”
