Several famous players have either played in, worn or held an Oxford United shirt over the years.

One of these was Brazil legend Pele, widely regarded as one of the best football players of all time, who won three FIFA World Cups.

We recently covered the story on how the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner came to have the 1986 Milk Cup winners shirt in his hands in 2015.

This led the Oxford Mail to dip into our archives to see which other notable players have worn or held the Oxford United shirt in the past including England great Paul Gascoigne.

The Yellows were taking on Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium in the Football League First Division on May 3, 1998.

Boro ran out as 4-1 winners with the prize being an immediate return to the Premier League for Bryan Robson’s team after just one year away from the top division.

All five goals came in the second half as Alun Armstrong and Craig Hignett’s braces put Boro in charge before Nicky Banger netted a consolation for the visiting U’s.

Scenes of celebration broke out at full-time as the home side won promotion and Middlesbrough star Paul Gascoigne swapped shirts with Martin Gray, donning Oxford United yellow as he celebrated.
