SAM Long says his success last season will count for nothing as he seeks to push on this campaign.

The right back claimed the Andrew Knapton supporters’ player of the season and players’ player of the season prizes, and said he hopes Oxford United can go one step better in the forthcoming season.

His absence due to injury for the play-off semi-final ties against Blackpool was keenly felt, after a season where he racked up 44 appearances and six goals – both career bests.

“Last year especially I had a good season, and it stemmed from the few seasons before – working hard, keeping my head down and doing the right things,” he said.

“Nothing’s changed, I’m still going to do exactly the same now, if not even more because I need to stay in the team and keep improving.

“That will hopefully help towards getting where we want to be.

“I don’t think anyone will be resting on their laurels, especially me.

“I want to kick on and hopefully have another year like the last one, and just go one step better.”

The U’s squad is currently in Bournemouth, with pre-season well underway.

“I can’t sit back on last year’s performances.

“Because I played well last year, doesn’t mean I can relax this year.

“I need to be just as on it this year and hopefully put in the performances I did last year, and help the team out as much as I can.

“Everyone in the club and in the dressing room drives each other on.

“I don’t think anyone in the dressing room will be able to say they can be comfortable.

“You haven’t worked as hard as we’ve worked to get where are to then get there and relax.”
