OXFORD City are anxiously awaiting the results of a vote that will decide whether they get to complete their Vanarama National League South campaign.

Clubs in the National League’s three divisions have until February 29 to opt for their favoured resolution for the outcome of the season, with many understood to have already submitted their choices.

The North and South leagues were suspended for a fortnight on January 22 after a £10m government grant expired, with teams unhappy that only loans have been promised moving forward.

City, who are fourth in the table, are keen to play on and director Justin Merritt expects a decision to be reached before the cut-off in 11 days’ time.

“Nearly all the votes are in to our knowledge,” he said.

“Clubs are angry at each other and if there was stronger leadership from the start this could have been less painful.

“We aren’t happy about the funding issues, but we’re able to find a way to get out on the field and connect with the community.

“We respect that other clubs might not be in the same position, but our stance is we want to play.”

The disagreements over funding have disrupted City’s last two matches.

Tuesday’s home game against Slough Town was officially postponed less than five hours before kick-off, with the visitors refusing to play until a vote on whether to end the season has concluded.

Last weekend’s scheduled opponents, Dulwich Hamlet, hold a similar opinion, meaning Chelmsford City stepped in at 48 hours’ notice.

Slough and Dulwich added their names to a joint statement signed by 16 National League North and South clubs last month, which called for the season to be curtailed.

Safety is also an issue, as no Covid testing programme is in place in the National League – despite the three divisions being classed by the government as elite sport.

City ordered their first batch of testing kits earlier this month in the hope the campaign will continue to its scheduled end date in May.

Saturday’s scheduled visitors, Braintree Town, are another side who have not played since before the campaign was suspended, but that game is on as it stands.
