PAUL Lambert believes no-one could have complained if Ipswich Town had gone 3-0 up before Matty Taylor scored for Oxford United.

The striker’s effort just before the break was the only goal of the game at Portman Road.

REPORT: Ipswich Tn 0, Oxford Utd 1

It saw the U’s move to within a point of the Tractor Boys, with a game in hand just outside the Sky Bet League One play-off places.

Lambert felt the key was his side’s failure to make the most of a good spell they had while the game was goalless.

He told the East Anglian Daily Times: “They (Oxford) defended the crosses well. We had some good moments.

“They looked to hit us on the counter but there was never that much threat.

REACTION: Karl Robinson hails memorable Portman Road win

“We were trying to knock on the door but it just never unlocked.

“If we take one or two of those chances in the first half then it becomes a totally different game.

“If we had gone in two or three up I don’t think anybody would have begrudged us that.”

U’s boss Karl Robinson argued the visitors were always come under pressure at times.

He said: “We knew we weren’t going to be fluent, but it wasn’t about that.

“You’ve come up against (Alan) Judge, (Will) Keane, (Kayden) Jackson, it’s one of the most formidable front threes in the league, so for us to shut them out in the way that we did was exceptional.”
