GEORGE Thorne has become Oxford United’s second loan signing in three hours.

The 26-year-old midfielder arrives from Derby County on a deal which initially lasts until January.

He follows the news of Matty Taylor’s arrival and could be the U’s final signing of the summer.

Thorne has come in search of his first regular football in 18 months, having made just three appearances last season on loan at Luton Town.

He has also suffered three serious injuries which have halted a promising career, but believes United can offer him the platform to perform.

Thorne, who knows United head coach Karl Robinson well due to having the same agent, said: “It was important for me to get out and play for someone who trusts me.

“It’s important for me to get games under my belt, so I think it was the right time for both parties and I’m looking forward to it.

“There were a couple of options but there would be no point in me going somewhere that doesn’t play the way that suits me. It would do me no favours.

“I’m always going to be this kind of player and that’s not going to change. I had to pick carefully and I think this ticked all the boxes at the right time.”

Thorne adds competition to a squad with plenty of central midfielders, but Robinson feels none can offer what the former West Brom apprentice brings.

He said: “At one stage George Thorne was the best player in the Championship, until he had that leg break (in 2016).

“We spoke to two or three Luton players and they were saying he was the best player in training, but the manager kept with the same players because they were winning, which is understandable.

“To have someone of that calibre is fantastic.”

A pre-season disrupted by a nerve issue which needed an injection means Thorne is short of fitness.

He will definitely not feature against Burton Albion tomorrow night, with the paperwork being completed after the midday deadline today.

Thorne takes United’s loan contingent to four, following Taylor, Chris Cadden and Ben Woodburn – one below the maximum permitted in an 18-man matchday squad.
