OXFORD United’s rising stars will get a taste of the big time tonight as they attempt to claim a Premier League scalp.

The under 18s are at Turf Moor (7pm) to face Burnley in the FA Youth Cup third round.

It is a rare chance to play on a big stage and United’s joint youth team coach Leon Blackmore-Such is urging his players to grab it with both hands.

He said: “They’ve earned where they are right now because they’ve worked so hard.

“I’m really pleased they’ve got an opportunity to play at a Premier League stadium.

“For some it will be the biggest stadium they ever play in.

“Hopefully it’s something they can remember for the rest of their lives and who knows, they might get another one.

“It is an experience, but I’m hoping we can give ourselves an opportunity to get through.”

United have high hopes for the current crop, who are six points clear in the EFL Youth Alliance South West table.

And the process of tying down their most talented players to professional contracts continued yesterday.

A week after Kyran Lofthouse put pen-to-paper, defender Michael Elechi signed a contract which will last until summer 2021.

United recruited the 17-year-old at the end of last season, following his release after two campaigns with Manchester United.

The Londoner is keeping his feet on the ground, but is relishing the prospect of tonight’s game.

He said: “It’s a very good experience for all of us and is something we can learn from.

“I think we can progress. We have a very strong team and are doing very well in the league.

“I do need to show my worth now and show why I was offered a pro contract. I just need to keep improving and work my way up.”

And if any extra incentive were needed, victory would earn a home tie in the last-32 against either Bournemouth or Mansfield Town.

Dan Harris, head of United’s academy, said: “Credit to all the staff involved – Leon and Chris Hackett are doing a great job coaching, but there’s a whole support network around them.

“We are excited about the talent that’s in the group at the moment, but that’s all it is – talent.

“Now what we’re looking at with these young men is this is another opportunity against a Premier League team to take a step towards playing in Karl (Robinson)’s first team.”
