PUPILS and staff at Rose Hill Primary School stuck in cold classrooms could have their boiler fixed by tomorrow.

On Saturday, the Oxford Mail revealed that children have been forced to wear jackets and gloves inside after temperatures dropped to 10C due to heating problems.

Contractors are currently trying to fix one of two boilers, which paid for by Oxfordshire County Council last October.

Headteacher Sue Vermes said: “The contractors have said that they should be able to fix the boiler by tomorrow, but this still doesn’t resolve the problem that we have.

“It was still too cold in the classrooms when the boilers were working in December.

“The council haven’t said yet whether they’re going to replace the single-glazed windows, which are causing a massive issue.”

Due to the cold temperatures in the classrooms of 120 Key Stage Two pupils, Mrs Vermes has given parents the option to take their children out of school.

Mrs Vermes said: “We’ve had seven families choose to take their children out of classes until the boilers are fixed, because they’re worried about their children working in the cold conditions.

“We try and and do all we can by taking children to other areas of the school, but unfortunately there is learning that cannot be done anywhere else but the classroom.”

County council member for business and customer services Nick Carter said: “Temporary heaters have been offered to the school but this is clearly an unacceptable situation and we are doing all we can to get the system working properly, as swiftly as possible.”
