A community has been left in shock after a man was left fighting for his life from falling from an e-scooter.
The man, aged 57, was travelling on the e-scooter with another man, 22, along Church Cowley Road in East Oxford in the early hours of Thursday, October 10.
Between about 12.42am and 12.25am, the e-scooter was involved in a crash of some sort which resulted in both men falling off.
The 57-year-old, from Hillingdon in west London, suffered a "significant" head injury and is in a critical condition in hospital.
Meanwhile, the 22-year-old from Flintshire, North Wales - who escaped with minor cuts and bruises - was arrested on suspicion of driving while over the prescribed alcohol limit and causing serious injury by careless driving.
He has since been released under investigation, police said on Friday morning.
Cowley city councillor Ed Mundy said he is "deeply saddened" to hear of the incident.
"Significant head injuries can be life changing, and my thoughts go to the injured 57 year old man and his family," the Green councillor said.
"The report that the driver of the scooter is under suspicion of having been over the alcohol limit is very worrying.
"Scooters driven carelessly or recklessly can result in injuries to the riders and/or pedestrians.
"Drivers should be wearing a helmet for their own safety, and should never be taking a pillion passenger.
"It is important that Thames Valley Police are able to investigate this incident, so please share footage, such as from a dash cam, if you have it.
"Residents along Iffley Road, Henley Avenue or Church Cowley Road may also have door bell video footage that could help, please check if you do."
Thames Valley Police's traffic officer Mark Jones is also appealing for witnesses and said the pair's journey is believed to have started on the Iffley Road.
Mr Jones said: "We are carrying out enquiries to establish exactly what happened and would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or saw the e-scooter being ridden in the area beforehand.
"If you were driving in the area and have dash-cam footage, or if you have any information that could assist our investigation, please get in touch."
Police confirmed the e-scooter was a legitimately rented one from Voi allowed on the roads.
Privately owned e-scooters are illegal to use on public roads, pavements or cycle paths and can only be ridden on private land with the landowner’s permission.
E-scooters are by law restricted to 15.5mph and riders of rental schemes are only available to use with a driver's licence.
