An MP is calling for global action to prevent the rise of superintelligent artificial intelligence.
Olly Glover, Liberal Democrat MP for Didcot and Wantage, raised the issue during parliamentary questions to the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, urging the Government to use the UK’s 2027 G20 presidency to push for an international agreement.
He said: "AI has the potential to aid our scientific research, and here at home in Didcot and Wantage constituency, I have already seen first-hand how businesses can benefit from these advances.
"However, there are serious risks that we need to consider, and the threat posed by superintelligent AI is real."
Mr Glover referenced a cross-party letter sent to the Prime Minister last month, signed by 85 parliamentarians, calling for a global agreement to prevent the development of superintelligent AI.
He also highlighted the transformative potential of AI for scientific research at sites like Harwell and Culham in his constituency, while stressing the need for international cooperation to manage the technology’s risks.
Kanishka Narayan, minister for AI, responded by saying that AI would be at the top of the agenda and that the government was looking to take a leadership role in ensuring the safe and responsible development of AI technology.
Mr Glover welcomed the minister’s response.
He said: "I was pleased to hear the minister acknowledge the need for the UK to take a lead on the world stage and encourage international cooperation on this issue."
