With searches for "garden features" up 435 per cent in the past year and homeowners increasingly investing in outdoor spaces, experts are warning that popular upgrades can quickly become costly mistakes if long-term durability and maintenance are overlooked.

Ellie Parker from Oxfordshire-based natural stone specialists Stoneworld said: "When people plan a garden renovation, it's natural to focus on how the finished space will look.

"However, some of the most costly mistakes happen when maintenance requirements, durability and long-term performance aren't considered from the outset.

"A garden should continue to look and perform well years down the line, not just on the day the project is completed."

Google Trends data shows growing interest in a range of garden projects, including swimming pools (up 247 per cent), driveway installations (up 113 per cent), outdoor kitchens (up 49 per cent), and timber decking (up 21 per cent).

But Stoneworld warns that without proper planning and quality materials, these improvements can lead to expensive repairs or replacements.

One common pitfall is choosing cheap timber decking.

While often selected for its affordability, low-quality decking requires regular staining, sealing, and repairs.

Exposure to the elements can cause warping, splintering, and rot, leading to higher long-term costs.

Another mistake is opting for low-cost paving.

Ms Parker said: "We often see homeowners choosing paving primarily based on price, only to find that it begins to fade, stain or deteriorate sooner than expected.

"Investing in quality materials from the start can often prove more cost-effective in the long run, helping homeowners avoid premature repairs and replacement costs."

Driveways are also a common source of regret.

Poor ground preparation and inadequate drainage can cause even high-quality materials to crack, shift, or retain standing water.

Experts say that installation quality often matters more than material choice when it comes to longevity.

Outdoor kitchens are increasingly popular, but not all are built to withstand the unpredictable British weather.

Units, worktops, and appliances not designed for outdoor use can quickly deteriorate in rain and frost.

Swimming pools, while a dream for many, can become a financial drain if not carefully planned.

Problems with drainage, layout, and surrounding materials can lead to costly future repairs.

Ms Parker said: "A swimming pool is a significant investment, so careful planning is essential.

"The areas around a pool endure heavy footfall and constant exposure to water, so selecting the right materials from the outset can make a substantial difference to both longevity and enjoyment."

Stoneworld advises homeowners to consider maintenance, installation quality, and product lifespan alongside visual appeal and upfront costs.

Ms Parker said: "The most successful outdoor spaces are usually those where quality, practicality and longevity are considered alongside appearance.

"A well-planned garden should continue adding value and enjoyment for many years to come."

Other experts agree that focusing solely on aesthetics or initial costs can lead to disappointment.

As interest in garden upgrades continues to rise, the message is clear: thoughtful planning, quality materials, and skilled installation are key to creating outdoor spaces that stand the test of time.
