The ‘fastest man in history’ Usain Bolt descended on an East Lancashire football club earlier this month.

The Olympic gold medalist, who has held the world record for the fastest 100-meter sprint since 2009, was spotted at Burnley Football Club on April 17.

The 37-year-old is not hanging his running shoes up to become a footballer at the club. He was there to support a young person who was playing that day.

Posting to Facebook, Burnley FC said it was “nice to see Usain on the training ground”.

He was watching the under-21s match between Burnley FC and Stockport County, when Burnley booked their place in the final of this season’s Central League Cup with a 4-3 victory.  Burnley FC said Usain was there to watch a player on the opposing team.

It is not the first time Usain has come to Lancashire to watch a match.

Last year, Usain attended a Blackburn Rovers game with friend and former Bolton Wanderers winger Ricardo Gardner, whose son Che Gardner was playing in a trial match.

Che currently plays as a midfielder for Stockport County Under 18s.

Usain, who has eight Olympic gold medals and retired from sprinting in 2017,  stayed at The Avenue Hotel in Brockhall Village during his visit in 2023.

The hotel’s David Cook, general manager, said Usain was down-to-earth and happy to pose for photos with guests and staff.
