A prisoner who tried to smuggle mobile phones into HMP Bullingdon in an adapted can of sweetcorn has had his sentence extended.

Ramela Gordon, aged 27, currently of HMP Belmarsh, was convicted on Wednesday of two counts of possession of a prohibited mobile phone in prison.

He was sentenced to a further 15 months’ imprisonment following a hearing at Oxford Crown Court.

Gordon was being transferred to HMP Bullingdon on February 3, 2022.

Whilst being booked in the property he had brought with him was X-rayed.

A can of sweetcorn appeared suspicious and on examination it turned out to be an adapted can holding items including a mobile phone, eight SIM cards, charging cables and USB sticks.

Then on February 26, 2022, during a search of Gordon’s cell officers located another mobile phone.

He was charged on June 13, 2022.

Investigating officer PC Andy Gold of the Prison Crime Team, said: “Mobile phones in prison can have a serious detrimental effect on the safe day-to-day running of prison establishments, putting both prisoners and staff at risk of harm.

“I am pleased that Gordon has been given a further custodial sentence which reflects the seriousness of the offence.”
