For the first time in history, the Oxford University Press (OUP) word of the year will be decided by the public.

OUP have shortlisted three words as contenders for the word of the year award, and the winner has been put to public vote.

The first word is ‘metaverse’, usage of which has quadrupled in October 2022 compared to the same period last year.

The second word is #IStandWith, which recognises the activism and division that has characterized this year.

And the final word is ‘Goblin mode’; the idea of rejecting societal expectations put upon us, in favour of doing whatever one wants to.

You can vote for your favourite word to be crowned Oxford’s Word of the Year 2022 here.

Voting will close at 00.01am on Friday, December 2.
