THE number of patients being treated in hospital for covid in Oxfordshire has gone down, according to new NHS data.

Oxford University Hospitals Trust, which runs the John Radcliffe and the Churchill hospitals in Oxford and the Horton General Hospital in Banbury, was caring for 120 coronavirus patients in hospital as of Tuesday last week (August 2), figures show.

NHS England data shows the number of people being treated in hospital for covid by 8am on that day was down from 143 on the same day the previous week.

The figures also show that 44 new covid patients were admitted to hospital at the trust in the week to July 31. This was down from 131 in the previous seven days.

However, the number of beds at the trust occupied by people who tested positive for covid decreased by 22 per cent in the last four weeks – 28 days ago, there were 153.

Across England there were 10,177 people in hospital with covid as of August 2, with 240 of them in mechanical ventilation beds.

The number of Covid-19 patients hospitalised nationally has decreased by 8 per cent in the last four weeks, while the number on mechanical ventilators has increased by 5 per cent.

Last week, five more covid deaths were reported in Oxford. The figures include anyone who died within 28 days of a positive test result for covid, and whose usual residence was in Oxford.

Meanwhile, the number of covid cases in Oxfordshire has also gone done in the past week, according to government figures.

The total went from 1,243 to 774 in one week, a decrease of 37.7 per cent, putting the infection rate at 111.1 per 100,000 of the population.

In Oxford, the number of cases also went down from 301 to 157 in one week – a 42.1 per cent decrease, putting the infection rate at 103.6.

The highest number of cases was reported in Cowley North, where 15 people tested positive.

  • Greater Leys, 12

Covid cases figures for local authorities in the county are as follows:

  • Vale of White Horse, 169
  • West Oxfordshire, 140
  • South Oxfordshire, 147
  • Cherwell, 161
