A “UNIQUE” coach is returning to Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway this weekend.

The Watlington Flyer will be running services all day at the station in Chinnor on Saturday (25).

Passengers are invited to take a ride on the coach, known as an auto trailer, which once trundled between Watlington and Princes Risborough, stopping at halts and stations along the line.

It was built over 90 years ago and was a much-loved feature until British Railways services ended in 1957.

Stanley Hart, chairman of the heritage railway in Station Road, said: “We hope lots of people will want to see just what travel was like for local villages back in the mid-20th century.”

“The auto-trailer was officially called the Watlington Flyer and it certainly helped to keep this rural branch line alive, thanks to its very unusual design.”

Volunteer Bronwen Harris added: “We expect the return of this much-loved character to the line will make the day very enjoyable, so we recommend advance booking.

“Our trains are run by volunteers and so we won’t be on strike plus there is a large free car park at Chinnor station.”

Trains will depart at regular intervals for the 50-minute return journey. Children under three years travel free and accompanying five- to 15-year-olds cost £5.
