A special school celebrated its 30th birthday with alumni, pupils, parents, and teachers at a summer fayre.

The Unicorn School on Marcham Road in Abingdon is a specialist school for children with dyslexia and other learning disabilities, and this year it turned 30.

Treasure hunts, cake stalls, guess the teacher's baby picture and even a game that involved throwing a wet sponge at the head teacher kept everyone entertained.

Andrew Day has been the headteacher of the Unicorn school for 14 years and in that time, he has seen it double in size which he sees as a “It is a fantastic achievement”.

He said: “It was a fantastic turnout for current parents and pupils, as well as a number of old ex-unicorn students who came back for the day.”

He added: “The highlight for many of the pupils in particular was the throwing the wet sponges at a certain headteacher.”

More than 700 children have been supported by the school since it was first founded in 1991. The school started with just five pupils and now it has more than 100 and has a waiting list.

Leading up to the summer fayre, Mr Day met with three of the four past headteachers of the school to share old stories and memories.
