THE cause of a fire which started in an outbuilding near a hotel in Shillingford is still unknown.

The fire, which happened at about 6.30pm on Tuesday (15), spread to staff accommodation and smoke could be seen billowing up from behind Shillingford Bridge Hotel.

Staff and guests, who were all uninjured, were evacuated from the building by firefighters who had fully extinguished the fire by about 7pm.

Wallingford Road from the A4074 to Shillingford Road was closed until about 1am when crews finally left the scene after carrying out their investigations.

Station manager Will McPhail said firefighters started their investigation after the fire was extinguished but couldn’t confirm how long the investigation would take.

A spokesman for Oxfordshire County Council added: "Investigations are still under way but the fire is not thought to be suspicious.

"The fire involved an outbuilding close to the hotel which had spread to the roof of the hotel building. It is not known as the hotel looked after the guests [but] no guests or staff were injured.
