The Deputy Leader of Oxford City Council has announced he will be stepping down to run as the Labour candidate in Greater Manchester.

Labour councillor, Tom Hayes, announced in May that he would step down from his position as Deputy Leader and zero carbon cabinet member.

In a post of Twitter Mr Hayes said: “I’m proud of our work to tackle the climate crisis in socially just ways and thrilled my friend Chewe Munkonge is the new deputy leader.”

Tom Hayes continues to be a councillor for the St Clement’s ward in Oxford. However, he also announced he will be running to be the next Labour candidate for Stretford and Urmston in Greater Manchester.

Mr Hayes wants to tackle the cost-of-living crisis, help rebuild the NHS and bring green jobs to local communities.
