5G masts, solar panels and an industrial site are on the cards for Oxford if plans submitted to Oxford City Council are approved.

5G mast on Barton Lane
Plans have been submitted to Oxford City Council to build a new 5G mast.
The applicant, CK Hutchison Networks (UK) Ltd, is seeking permission to build the ‘slim line’ phase 8 monopole mast in Barton Lane, Headington.
In the planning documents, the applicant states there is an ‘acute need for a new base station’ in order to provide ‘effective service coverage’ in the area.
Currently, existing masts in the area are not capable of supporting the additional equipment needed to extend the signal coverage.
The design statement states the mast would ‘assimilate well into the immediate street scene and not be detrimental’, this is because the height of the proposed pole is the minimum required to bring 5G to the area.
Industrial development on old Gas Holder site
Plans have been submitted to Oxford City Council to build a new industrial site, which promises to bring jobs to the area.
The applicant, CMP Architects on behalf of Buccleuch Property and Wrenbridge Land, has applied for full planning permission to redevelop the former Gas Holder site in Oxford Road, Cowley, which is set to be demolished.
In the planning documents, the applicant stated the aim is to redevelop and regenerate the site by creating a ‘flexible and efficient building to suit modern market requirements’.
The revamped site would be used for general industrial processes and research and development of products or processes.
The applicant believes the site would generate jobs to the area, as well as allow businesses to ‘flourish’.
Temporary Oxford University buildings
Oxford University has applied to Oxford City Council for planning permission to retain use of a temporary research building and laboratory.
The temporary building and laboratory, which come under the Departments of Zoology and Biochemistry, are located at the University Club Field in Mansfield Road.
The buildings are currently in use due to the ‘unexpected’ closure of the Tinbergen Building on South Parks Road.
A facility which will replace the Tinbergen Building, called the Life and Mind Building (LaMB), is currently under construction.
Therefore, the temporary buildings need to be retained until the new facility is completed.
The university has requested permission to keep the temporary site for a further 12 months, at which point the buildings will be removed and the land returned to its previous use.
Eco-friendly changes to a home
Plans have been submitted to Oxford City Council by a homeowner to make their house more eco-friendly.
The plans were submitted by Dr Edward Norris-Cervetto for 6A The Court, Mary Price Close.
In the design and access statement, Dr Norris-Cervetto stated that as a household they wish to reduce their CO2 emissions ‘in line with Oxford City Council and the UK Government’s strategy and vision.
In order to reduce the household’s carbon footprint, permission has been sought to install solar panels and an air-source heat bump within the property.
Dr Norris-Cervetto accepts the installation of the solar panels will change the appearance of the property but noted such panels have already been approved.
The solar panels are not expected to impact neighbouring properties as they will protrude just 3cm from the roof.
5G mast on major Oxford road
Plans have been submitted to Oxford City Council to build a new 5G mast on a major road in the city.
If approved, the plans would see the applicant – CK Hutchinson Networks - build a new mast on the Eastern Bypass Road.
The applicant is working to support the Government’s digital connectivity objective by building mobile networks which support improved coverage and capacity, such as 5G.
The area where the proposed mast would be built currently does not have the infrastructure to support the additional equipment needed to extend coverage in the area.
It is stated in the planning documents that the placement of the new mast would assimilate into the street scene and not be detrimental to the visuals.
