Nell Gwynn to be performed at Corn Exchange in Wallingford

Nell Gwynn, which will be performed by the Sinodun Players, will be at the theatre in Market Place from Wednesday, May 25 to Saturday, May 28.

The show, written by Jessica Swale, is about the Nell Gywnn, a celebrity figure of the Restoration period, who became King Charles II’s favourite mistress. She is also best known for being one of the first actresses on the English stage.

Sophie Beaumont has been cast at the main character and will be performing among a cast of 15.

Directors Julie Utley and Caroline Malnick, who have previously teamed up to direct pantomimes at the Corn Exchange, said they both loved this play on the first reading.

The pair added that even though many of the characters in this play really did exist, the play is not a “slave to history”.

Both directors commented that they have “tried to capture Nell’s spirit” as writer Ms Swale said the play “should be an entertaining homage” to the character of Nell.

The performance will be on every evening at 7:45pm with a matinee performance on the Saturday at 2:30pm.

There is a special offer on ticket prices for the Wednesday performance of £9 with all other performances tickets costing £12.
