The fire service reported: “On arrival, it was immediately apparent that there was a significant fire involving the second floor and the roof space.

“Two breathing apparatus wearers were quickly committed to bring the fire under control and stop further fire spread within the house and stop it spreading to the neighbouring house.

“The occupants of the property, who were asleep when the fire started, were alerted to the fire by the smoke alarm on the landing just outside the bedroom where the fire started.

“This allowed the whole household to leave the building safely.”

Crew manager Christopher Whitworth said: “The family was lucky that they had a working smoke alarm on the same floor that the fire started, which gave the family early warning allowing them to get out.

“Without this smoke alarm, the outcome could have been a lot worse.”
