An "incredibly poorly" dog has died after being abandoned on the side of the road in Oxford while suffering with a highly contagious disease.

The Jack Russell Terrier, who was around two-years old, was found by a passerby on Victoria Road in North Oxford on Friday, November 12.

He was taken to Medivet in Woodstock and when the vets discovered he had parvovirus they alerted the RSPCA.

Parvovirus is a highly infectious disease which attacks the intestines causing severe vomiting, diarrhoea and dehydration in dogs, without treatment it can be fatal.

When the dog was taken into care RSPCA Inspector Prisca Giddens described him as "incredibly poorly" and appealed to the public for information.

Inspector Giddens said: “We understand that people’s circumstances can change which may mean they can no longer afford to care for their pets but there is never an excuse to abandon an animal like this, and especially a dog which is clearly so poorly and in need of urgent veterinary care.

“If you have any information, if you recognise this dog, or if you saw anything around Victoria Road in Oxford on Friday at around 5pm please contact the RSPCA, in strictest confidence, on 0300 123 8018.”
