AN OXFORD University vice chancellor has resigned.

Professor Louise Richardson took the job in 2016 and was the first-ever female vice-chancellor of Oxford University.

This week she announced she would be leaving the university in December 2022 for a new venture as the president of the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

According to the University, the process of choosing her successor is already “well-advance”.

Professor Richardson said: “My time at Oxford has been the most exhilarating, challenging and rewarding period in my career, and there remains so much more to be done together in the year ahead."

The American corporation that she will be joining supports education programmes in the US and worldwide.

“At Carnegie I will be leading a Foundation dedicated to my twin passions of education and peace, but Oxford - and my remarkable colleagues here - will never be far from my thoughts", she added.

The committee, led by Chancellor Lord Patten of Barnes, is expected to submit their nomination for approval in summer next year.

Lord Patten of Barnes said she has brought "passion, strong leadership and unending energy" to her role, and would leave the university with "our very best wishes and deepest thanks."
