POST delays in the city are "unacceptable", say Oxford MP Layla Moran.

People in Oxford have reported waiting weeks for important letters, bills and birthday cards.

Now one MP has taken to Twitter to hit out at Royal Mail.

She said: “I’m aware of the issues some of my constituents in OX2 are having with postal delays.

“I have already reached out to Royal Mail, but it still hasn’t been resolved. I will write to the Minister responsible. This level of service is unacceptable.”

The OX2 postcode includes North and West Oxford, Botley, North Hinksey, Summertown, Wytham, Jericho, Wolvercote.

On Monday, Liberal Democrat Councillor Andrew Gant spoke with the Oxford Mail about the post delays in Summertown.

Mr Gant said: “I live in Summertown so it is effecting me as well. We had no post at all during last week we did have a delivery on Saturday but there is clearly a big backlog.

“Lots of people are saying that time sensitive mail is delayed and they cannot get it, so it is causing a great deal of worry and inconvenience.”

Mr Gant said he contacted Royal Mail's customer service team and got through after a 'long wait'. He was told a regional manager would phone him back but he is still waiting.

In a bid to find out what happened, he went down to his local sorting office to investigate the matter himself.

He said he was told the issues were apparently due to the 'reorganisation' as well as staff shortages caused by Covid-19 and Brexit.

Though the delays are now being worked through, Mr Gant was told it could take up to two weeks to clear.

The Summertown councillor said this is "pretty poor".

Last week, another resident in north Oxford told us that he had also been down to the Oxford sorting office - where staff put the trouble down to a 'new system'.

He said that bags of post are being sorted by the posties, hence the delay.

Royal Mail has previously apologised for the delays and blamed 'resourcing issues' as the cause.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “In the local area, we are currently experiencing some resourcing issues which we are addressing as quickly as possible. We aim to deliver to all addresses we have mail for six days a week.

“If resourcing issues prevent this, we'll deliver at least every other day. We apologise to customers for any inconvenience they may experience as we work hard to resolve the situation.”

Royal Mail has been approached for comment about the on-going delays.
