Plans to demolish and rebuilt a ‘run-down’ hotel in Oxford have been submitted to the council.
The Victoria Hotel, located on the west side of Abingdon Road, is described by planners as ‘outdated and run-down’ and in a ‘poor condition’.
The hotel has faced problems with rats and squatters, with the police ‘concerned’ about the ‘escalating problem’ of homeless people occupying the buildings.

Proposed plans would see the existing hotel replaced with a new high-end, 38-bedroom hotel called The Edge Hotel.
Planners state the new hotel would be more energy efficient and sustainable than the current site. It would also have more bedrooms which planners believe would improve the accommodation options in Oxford and give a ‘welcome boost’ to the local economy.
The existing proprietor's accommodation would also be replaced by a two bedroom maisonette.
If approved, the proposed hotel would be on three floors and, together with the maisonette and plant room building, have a combined footprint 3 sq metres smaller than the existing hotel and outbuildings.
Inside, the hotel would feature large double en-suite rooms, a high specification of soft furnishings, rainfall showers and a contemporary feel.
A large reception / café area will serve fresh pastries / cakes every morning (supplied by a local bakery) alongside coffee, tea and other drinks. There will be no kitchen, restaurant or bar and no resident staff.
The business model is to target tourists and professionals who want a ‘a no frills but high-end’ hotel experience in Oxford, planners say.
