Slatters Butchers in Jeremy Clarkson’s village up for sale

Slatters Butchers has been at the heart of the West Oxfordshire village for more than 100 years, with that little slice of history soon coming to an end.

The butchers, built in 1892, was taken over by John Slatter in 1956 and with its upstairs flat, provided a family home for the Slatter family.

Mr Slatter, wife Beryl, and their three sons Jonathan, Martin and Michael, lived and worked at the butchers, which would deliver and sell products to villages across West Oxfordshire.

Martin Slatter and his wife took over the business 35 years ago, but recently made the decision to sell up.

Jonathan’s wife, Nadine, explained: “It’s the right time to sell, everyone has fond memories but obviously don’t want to be landlords forever.

“It’s a lovely building and iconic in the village, where there’s always been such a good, tight community.

“It’s likely to remain as a butchers or a shop of some sort in the village, which is what everyone will want.

“It’s the end of an era so it will be sad to let go but Martin has done his time and wants to do other things now without the hassle of being a landlord.”

The butchers was very much on the map before Clarkson’s Farm rolled into the village, with David Cameron using its pork ribs when hosting former US president Barack Obama during a Downing Street barbecue in May 2011.

Mrs Slatter admitted Clarkson’s Farm had brought in more people to the area though.

She said: “For those going to Clarkson’s shop and then can’t get there because of the queues, people come here instead.

“The show has been a victim of its own success, it’s a brilliant programme.

“It’s brought a lot of traffic but there’s now a lot of interest in the area – people are coming from everywhere to go on holiday here.

“The programme has put farming into the domain and into people’s thoughts, and shown how hard farming is.”

The freehold investment opportunity is on the market through Carter Jonas, with a £750,000 asking price.

Simon McConnell, head of residential sales at the estate agents, said: “We’ve had interest on a different number of levels, those who want to buy it and keep the shops in their current use and people wanting to protect the feel of the village.

“It’s too early to say what stage we’re at in terms of a sale but we’re talking to a number of interested companies.

“The combination of Jeremy Clarkson and his farm, and the wider West Oxfordshire offer, has had an impact on people who are considering an area they might not have done previously.”
