A man from Oxford flipped a 365lb (165kg) tyre up the highest mountain in southern Britain, all to help raise money for charity.

The incredible feat was undertaken by Dan Carter, who flipped the tyre up Pen y Fan in Brecon Beacons National Park.

He completed the challenge after a gruelling 11 hours and more than 1,200 flips of the tyre.

The challenge enabled Mr Carter to raise nearly £3,500 for Helen and Douglas House, an Oxford-based hospice providing palliative, respite, end-of-life and bereavement care to life-limited children and their families.

He originally envisioned the event as an individual challenge but then saw the opportunity to raise money for the hospice.

Mr Carter, a personal trainer at Feelfit Gym, said: “It was a personal challenge at first and there was no external motivation towards it, it was just a case of ‘let’s see if it can be done’.

“It was to see how far you can push the body and pass on the message on that if you put your head to something and train for it, you can do anything.”

He chose Helen and Douglas House because his gym had previously raised funds for it. Mr Carter also visited the charity on an open day and the seeing the work they do with children and families ‘moved’ him.

He said: “I had my daughter not long after that and that puts everything in perspective. They deal with the worst thing that can ever happen to a family on a day-to-day basis.”

Mr Carter began training in April 2021 with the original intention to flip a 220lb (100kg) tyre. However, when a 365lb tyre was delivered to the gym he decided to use that one instead after the first session with it went well.

Mr Carter said the challenge was a ‘mental fight’ towards the end and he felt like he had been ‘hit by a bus’ afterwards.

Andrea Baganz-Pritchard, community fundraising manager at Helen & Douglas House, said: “We would like to congratulate Dan on his amazing achievement. It was an epic challenge and we are so grateful to Dan for taking on this challenge to raise funds for Helen & Douglas House.

“The money he has raised will help fund care which families depend on at the toughest times of their lives and what Dan achieved is nothing short of incredible.

“We would like to thank him for helping local terminally ill children and their families’.
