Vietnamese restaurant Pho is promoting a cookery initiative which it hopes will be tried out in Oxfordshire schools in the autumn.

The chain launched a branch at Oxford Westgate’s rooftop terrace when the new £440m shopping centre opened in 2017.

Now staff have linked up with Cook School in a bid to help youngsters gain confidence cooking different recipes.

Cook School is a non-profit organisation which was set up to help teach children around the country how to cook.

Pre-Covid, Pho staff visited primary schools around the UK as part of Cook School and helped to teach children how to make summer rolls as part of their curriculum.

Recently, Cook School started making Kids Recipe Boxes with step by step recipes written by children’s cook book author Amanda Grant.

Ms Grant, co-founder of Cook School, said: “Cook School recipes are written and adapted to suit children’s developmental stage and age to really encourage independence and confidence in the kitchen by learning new skills and trying new foods.

“This is why children repeatedly cook our recipes. As they grow, so does their skill level and the range of foods they have learned to love.

“Cook School recipes are adapted for children but we work with incredible chefs and top quality produce so these are recipes they will have for life!”

Prior to launching these at-home boxes (and prior to Covid), Pho and Cook School had linked up to deliver several summer roll making masterclasses to primary schools around the country.

Ms Grant added: “These days gave hundreds of children a unique experience to learn about healthy eating and Vietnamese food culture, all whilst picking up a handy new skill at the same time.

“The children would take their preparations back home to share with their families. Once restrictions are eased in the future we will be starting these up again in the new academic year.”

Pho and Cook School are now launching a Vietnamese Summer Rolls Kids Recipe Box which will be available to order online every week in July.

The box comes with a recipe card (which also links to a video of a child making the rolls) and all of the ingredients needed to prep, wrap and roll our vegetarian summer rolls, plus dipping sauce for four people.

Pho and Cook School will also be launching their ‘Sponsor a Classroom’ initiative, allowing people the opportunity to fund boxes to go to schoolchildren.

Since it opened in Oxford Pho has become popular for its pho noodle soups, healthy salads, rice bowls and rich, fragrant curries.

Pho’s food is nearly entirely gluten free, over a third of their main menu is vegan, and they have options for young diners too, in a bid to offer something for everyone.
