Our picture of members of 150 Squadron (City of Oxford) Air Training Corps brought back happy memories for reader Reg Shefford.

Seeing them in front of a Folland Gnat, the RAF’S advanced jet trainer aircraft, during their summer camp at RAF Valley in Anglesey in 1973, reminded him of his own time with the squadron.

He writes: “I joined in 1952 when I was 15 and stayed until I was 20. It was best thing I ever did.

“We met for training on Wednesday and Friday nights and some weekends.

“We had so many adventures, including a gliding course at Weston-on-the-Green.

“I did three circuits solo – and we had a flight in a Sunderland flying boat at RAF Mount Batten, Plymouth.

“I learned so much.”

Despite five years in the ATC, Mr Shefford, of Meadow Lane, Iffley, had difficulty getting into the RAF to do his National Service.

He recalls: “They told me there were no vacancies.

“Despite passing a proficiency exam in the ATC that would guarantee me entry into the RAF, they still refused to take me.

“In the end, I had to get my commanding officer to come with me to sort it all out, and I’m pleased to say that he did.”

In the picture above, which includes cadets from 2210 Cowley Squadron, Mr Shefford is 15th from the right in the third row from the front.
