A 58-year-old man is fighting for his life in hospital after a crash on the A40 last night.

Two air ambulances went to the scene after five people were injured.

The road was closed in both directions all night as forensic investigators worked on the road to piece together what happened between three cars and a trailer.

The incident is understood to have happened between 9.30pm and 10pm.

An hour later, at 11.24pm, Glos Police Specialist Ops tweeted: "The A40 between Northleach and Burford is closed due to a serious road traffic collision involving multiple vehicles. It is likely to be closed all night. We cannot give any indication as to when it will reopen."

A diversion was put in place from Cheltenham towards the Northleach roundabout on the A429 towards Stow Hill then right onto the A424 to Burford where cars could join the A40 again.

At 8.15 this morning all the vehicles on the road had been recovered but Gloucestershire Highways staff were due to clear up the road which is 'incredibly slippy & potentially hazardous due to a large amount of fluids'.
