WILD swimmers braved the freezing cold waters of the Thames near Iffley Lock this morning to go for a very brisk bathe.

While most people went out to make a snowman or take their daily walk, these swimmers decided to take an ice cold dip in the river.

Javier Monllor took this snap of the pair on his morning riverside run.

The runner stopped for a distanced chat with the swimmers who, although they admitted the water was freezing, seemed to enjoy their morning dip.

The two simmers did not wear wetsuits for extra warmth and they were not part of a club.

Mr Monllor said himself that he enjoys exercising in the snow.

He said: "I love running in the snow, all the mud had frozen so it is actually better."

In the summer months people jumped and sunbathed on the Thames banks and safety warnings were issued.

'Look before you leap' and 'don't drink and drown' are among the warnings in the authorities' new Wild Water Code.

Swimming in cold water does come with its dangers as swimming in rivers and lakes is very different to a pool.

In addition to strong currents, the cold water temperature can easily shock, limit ability to breathe and can make you tired very quickly.

However, many speak of the benefits which include reducing stress, burning calories, improving circulation and it can even give your immune system a boost.
