ELECTRIC vehicle charging points will be placed on streets across Oxford.

New electric car chargers for residents will soon appear on Southfield Road, off Cowley Road; Stone Street, between Divinity Road and Morrell Avenue; West Street off Botley Road, and Wytham Street off Abingdon Road.

The charging points are aimed to help people who do not have a driveway where they could charge up their car.

There will also be new charging points specifically for electric taxis on Keble Road, Old Greyfriars Street, and Rewley Road, all near the city centre.

A fourth charging point for taxis at Barns Road in Cowley was scrapped because objectors thought there was not enough room for it.

The charging points are part of a long-running scheme called Co Ultra Low Oxford, and are funded by Oxford City Council and the Government.

They were approved by Oxfordshire County Council's cabinet member for transport, Yvonne Constance at a meeting on Thursday.

Go Ultra Low Oxford is preparing for the uptake of electric cars by funding more charging points for these vehicles across the city.

On its website, it predicts more people could be buying electric cars than petrol or diesel by the year 2027.
