THREE men are due in court this morning after being charged following a New Year's Day attack which left a man in a critical condition.

Durham Police said officers were called to reports of an assault on Dodds Close, Wheatley Hill, shortly after 10.30am on January 1.

The victim, a 28-year-old man, was taken to hospital with serious head injuries and remains in a critical condition.

Three men, aged 28, 22 and 19 were charged with grievous bodily harm and will appear at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates court this morning (Wednesday, January 6).

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Thubron said: “This was an extremely quick but violent assault targeted at the victim.

“There is nothing to suggest the wider community are at risk however residents will see a continued police presence in the area as the investigation continues.

“Anybody who has any information regarding the assault can contact the Major Crime Team on 101 quoting incident number 224 of January 1.”
