OXFORD's Labour MP has warned about the need for a 'proper plan' for coronavirus controls once the second English lockdown ends.

Anneliese Dodds, MP for Oxford East, said the Government needed to give clarity on whether tier system introduced in October would continue after lockdown ended.

She made the warning while visiting the Oxford University coronavirus vaccine test centre earlier this week with Labour Party leader Keir Starmer.

Ms Dodds, who is also the shadow chancellor, said: "We still don’t have any indications for government what the system will be like when we come out of this lockdown in terms of potentially continuing the tier system. We don’t know from government how they envisaged that operating.

She added: "That is a problem. We have seen right along last minute decision making from Government and really we need a proper plan."

Earlier this week, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said it was too early to say which areas of England would be placed under harsher restrictions after the nationwide lockdown ended.

Speaking to ITV News, Mr Hancock said "there's no guarantees in any of this".

"What I can tell you is that we will do everything we can to keep people safe and to keep people as free as they possibly can be and to open up the economy as much as we safely can.

"But obviously keeping the virus under control is critical."

He also said there was no guarantee the second lockdown would come to an end on December 2 as originally planned, though MPs would need to vote on any extension to national restrictions.
