A ROAD rage driver who caused a crash on the M40 during an explosion of anger has been handed a community penalty.

Tom White had admitted one count of dangerous driving.

The 29-year-old of Newland Street, Eynsham, was sentenced at Oxford Crown Court today.

Prosecutors said the incident took place on the M40 northbound between junctions six and seven on June 24 this year.

At about 5.45pm White, driving a VW Passat was in the third lane overtaking, and behind a van.

That van took some time to over-take and return to the middle lane, the court heard, and when it had finished the manoeuvre White moved to the middle lane, in front of the van.

'Clearly angry' and 'gesticulating' at the van driver White slammed on the brakes, causing the other driver to do the same.

White repeated this a second time and it was then that the van driver lost control and crashed into a barrier.

White drove off and later reported the incident to police.

Sentencing, Judge Ian Pringle QC ordered a community order for 12 months.

As part of that order White must perform 120 hours of unpaid work and 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days.

He must also pay £750 compensation to the van driver and pay a victim surcharge.

White was also disqualified from driving for one year.
