Scenes for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again were shot in the picturesque village of Wytham near Oxford in 2018.

The first Mamma Mia! film in 2008 had been a box office smash and the sequel was also a success, grossing $395 million worldwide.

In the sequel there is a flashback to 1979, and Lily James, who plays a young Donna graduating from New College, is seen cycling with other actors.

The cycling scenes were filmed in Wytham village and other scenes were shot on the riverbank and at an Oxford college.

Ms James recently hit the headlines when it was revealed she has been spending time with married actor Dominic West.

Wytham itself is no stranger to the limelight.

The cameras first rolled in for Colin Dexter’s Inspector Morse: The Way through the Woods in 1992.

Wytham Manor went on to provide the setting for several films most notably JoJo Moyes’ Me Before You, filmed in 2015.

Mamma Mia! 2, written and directed by Ol Parker, stars Meryl Streep, Lily James, Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Dominic Cooper and Cher.

Ol Parker previously described the opening sequence, as akin to the first scene of La La Land, but with 80 newly-graduated Oxford students on their bikes in full academic dress.

Ms James has also played Lady Rose Aldridge in Downton Abbey. Some scenes for the TV series were filmed in the West Oxfordshire village of Bampton.

The actress also took the leading role in Disney’s 2015 live-action version of its classic, Cinderella.
