Drivers across Oxfordshire are being encouraged to send in pictures of their cars and explain why they are proud of them.

With the new Mini built at the Cowley car plant it’s not surprising that the first entries are Minis.

Since 2001, BMW has built the new Mini at the factory and it is also the home of the visitor centre museum which takes a detailed look at the history of the old Mini designed by Alec Issigonis.

Last month car enthusiast Tanya Field said she wanted people to send in pictures of themselves with their motors.

Geoff Corker has sent in a picture of his pride and joy - his Rover Mini Cooper Sport, which cost him £16,995.

The driver from Oxford bought the Mini last year and so far hasn’t added too much to the mileage.

He said: “I haven’t driven it far - from Oxford to Lymington in Hampshire is the longest journey - I only bought it in 2019.

“In my previous vehicle - a VW Camper - I went from Oxford to Gairloch in Scotland.”

Mr Corker keeps the solar red Mini in a locked garage and is relieved that so far it has never broken down.

He added: “It can go at 90mph - it wasn’t built for speed.”

As well as the VW Campervan in the past Mr Corker has also owned a Triumph Dolomite Sprint and a Morris Oxford.

Niclas Ademark also sent in a photo of his blue Austin Mini which came out in 1969 and cost him £1,000.

Mum-of-three Ms Field, who lives with husband Jason in Oxford, loves Minis so much she and her family have 10 old Minis and two BMW Minis.

The oldest, a blue Austin Mini 7, is now 60 years old.

Ms Field said: “Oxford is where the Mini is still made and Abingdon is the home of the MG so there are lots of people in Oxfordshire who are very enthusiastic about their cars and would love to see pictures of their owners with them.”

Some people own classic cars but you don’t have to own one of these to send in a picture - it could be an old Vauxhall Zafira that has faithfully carried your family thousands of miles.

Or you might have a really unusual vehicle you want to share pictures of and car club members could also send in their pictures.

Ms Field added: “As well as the Minis we also have three Maestros, a Montego and a Rover 800.

Oxford Mail:

“I like to rotate them so they all get driven.

“I have got a fairly modern car as well - a Vauxhall Agila which is 18 years old - I use that sometimes for running around in.”

Email car pictures to affrench@nqo.com. If you can send a picture of yourself with your car that’s even better.
