RESIDENTS have joined forces to remind drivers of the rules of the road after noticing increased traffic in their area.

Homemade signs have sprung up in Leckford Road and St Bernard's Road in Walton Manor, Oxford, as part of the Calm Leckford Road campaign.

It comes after the streets were being used as shortcuts for drivers getting onto Woodstock Road, following the experimental closure of Walton Street in nearby Jericho.

Leckford Road resident Jane Kaye is part of the initiative and believes it needs to contribute to wider change.

She said: "On numerous occasions people got out of their cars and engaged in verbal or physical abuse.

"That was quite a strain on the street.

"This is an opportunity to have a radical rethink of the area and to make it into a neighbourhood for everyone.

"The signs aren't permanent, but we've noticed a difference."

About 25 people clubbed together to pay for posters that aim to cut down on speeding, road rage and lorries breaking the 7.5 tonne weight limit.

There are 13 signs positioned near the entrance to Leckford Road at the junction with Woodstock Road alone.

But one resident of nearby Chalfont Road feels the signs are unnecessary.

He said: “My neighbours and friends don’t like the number of notices in a preservation area. It’s unsettling.”

Oxfordshire County Council spokesperson Martin Crabtree said: “We have been made aware of the signs and will be taking a look in due course.

“From what is shown there is nothing that gives misleading information.”
