A TEENAGER caught with a hunting knife in the city centre has appeared at court.

Zion Yearwood appeared via videolink from prison at Oxford Crown Court on Friday.

The 19-year-old of Benouville Close, Oxford pleaded guilty to one count of having an article with a blade or point.

Yearwood had a blade described as a 'hunting knife' while in Oxford's city centre.

He had the knife on High Street, Oxford, on May 29 this year.

After his guilty plea had been entered it was revealed that Yearwood is a 'second striker' and is therefore subject to a minimum jail term of at least six months custody.

Minimum sentences for 'second strike' offences of possession of knives or offensive weapons came into force in July 2015.

Yearwood's defence barrister Kellie Enever went on to ask for a pre-sentence report before sentencing.

That report compiled by the National Probation Service will explore all sentencing options.

She called her client a 'bright young man who for whatever reason is really having difficulty staying on the straight and narrow.'

Presiding Judge Ian Pringle QC agreed to adjourn the case and to impose sentence after a report is prepared on Yearwood.

He warned that as he is a 'second striker' he is likely to receive a 'significant sentence.'

The case was adjourned and Yearwood will appear again for sentencing to be held at the same court on July 24.
