OXFORD'S rainbow crossing has returned, just in time for this week's heatwave.

The colourful crossing was first instituted last year by Oxfordshire County Council to celebrate Oxford's annual Pride parade, and was then left as a permanent fun feature.

At the beginning of this month, contractors carrying out 'remedial work' on the crossing had to cover the rainbow over.

The work happened to take place at the exact same time that this year's Oxford Pride week should have been happening, but couldn't because of Covid-19.

The disappearance of the rainbow also happened as the sunniest May in Oxford's history gave way to a gloomy June.

But in another piece of perfect timing, the council has now reinstated the rainbow just in time for a very sunny week.

County councillor Liam Walker, cabinet member for highway operation and delivery, said: “As an inclusive organisation the county council threw its weight behind last year by putting in this vibrant addition to the crossing on New Road.

“It was a shame to see it go, but it was only for a short time and it’s given us the opportunity to make sure it’s still making a statement.

“The rainbow colours not only remind us of LGBTQI+ Pride but also, at this time, all the hard working NHS and care workers who are giving their all for our communities.”
