OXFORD City Council leader Susan Brown has been re-elected to her office and selected her cabinet.

Ms Brown was re-elected as leader of the council at the authority's first full meeting since the lockdown yesterday.

The overall membership of the council cabinet remains unchanged following the election, however the leader has shuffled individual portfolios.

Chief among the cabinet members are Ed Turner, deputy leader, and newly selected deputy leader Tom Hayes, who is also cabinet member for green transport and zero carbon Oxford.

At the full meeting the council also voted through a plan to hold a mayor making ceremony to usher in new Lord Mayor Mark Lygo in the autumn.

Councillors also unmuted their mics all at once to applaud staff members for their work through the coronavirus crisis, and paid tributes to Sabir-Hussain Mirza, a former city councillor who passed away due to the virus in April.

Following the meeting, Ms Brown said: “The impact of the current health crisis on our city, and in particular our most vulnerable citizens is likely to be further compounded by the economic crisis that is expected to follow. Our Council is committed to doing everything we can to rebuild our local economy but in so doing, make sure that our most vulnerable citizens stay safe and that we improve the inclusivity of our city rather than entrench divides."
