BUILDING projects across Oxford funded by the public are being put on hold for the foreseeable future due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The capital projects being put on hold include those currently under construction, as well as ones in the early stages of planning.

Which projects are on hold?

Projects where building work has stopped includes the extension to the Seacourt Park and Ride on Botley Road and repairs to the roof of the covered market.

Council-run projects which were still in the early phases of planning are also being postponed because they currently need members of the public to take part in face-to-face consultations.

This includes the redevelopment of Blackbird Leys, a project which only had a budget drafted last month.

Plans to renovate two community centres are also being postponed.

Construction work on the Bullingdon Community Centre was due to begin, while changes to East Oxford Communtiy Centre were still being planned out.

Construction work at new council homes in Rosehill has also been put off.

Which projects are still going ahead?

But while the 'vast majority' of these big plans are now on hold, some are still going ahead.

This includes the dismantling of the temporary decks at Oxpens Car Park and refurbishment work at Floyds Row homeless shelter.

In a statement about the postponement of major capital projects, Tom Bridgman, executive director for development at Oxford City Council said staff who were still carrying out work would wear proper PPE and obey social distancing guidelines.

He added: "We hope you understand that this decision has not been taken lightly, but we have a duty to protect the health of our employees, our contractors and the wider public.”
