A VIOLENT offender who inflicted grievous bodily harm on a man in Wallingford has appeared at court.

Shane Prothero appeared for sentencing via videolink from HMP Bullingdon at Oxford Crown Court yesterday.

The 43-year-old of Allnatt Avenue, Wallingford, had already admitted one count of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Prosecutors said the violent incident took place in a communal area near his home address in Wallingford on January 6 this year.

The court heard at yesterday's hearing that the attack on the sole male victim was a 'repeated assault' and involved the use of a shod foot.

Defence barrister Mark Butler said that the harm caused to the single victim was fortunately not as serious an injury as in other cases of inflicting grievous bodily harm.

He also said that while a 'substantial' prison sentence was likely to be imposed for the offence his client deserved credit for the plea of guilty that had been entered.

Presiding, Judge Maria Lamb asked for a pre-sentence report to decide the issues of 'dangerousness' of Prothero.

That report will be prepared by the National Probation Service before his final sentencing hearing.

A date was set for that hearing which will be held at the same court on May 15.

Prothero was remanded in custody in the meantime.
