USE of the canal towpath in Oxford for exercise purposes should be limited, says the Canal & River Trust.

Meanwhile, areas with residential moorings should be avoided entirely.

UPDATE: Towpath 'insanely busy' today despite warning

Oxford Waterways said due to the narrow path, and vulnerable people living in boats alongside them, the canal is not an appropriate place for exercise.

The tweet shared a poster with advice from the Canal and River Trust, which said: "Whilst out towpaths remain open, use of them should be limited.

"Avoid any stretches with boats moored against the towpath."

The trust is not allowing fishing until further notice, and has urged people to keep their distance from others.

On Monday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that the public may leave the house for exercise once a day during the current lockdown.
