The incident occurred close to Junction 17 for Prestwich and Whitefield and Junction 16 for Salford and Kearsley.

Motorway police officers were sent to the scene and the entire carriageway was closed, with traffic backed up since around 3.40pm.

A spokesman for the North West Motorway Police said: "We are currently en-route to a collision on M60 anticlockwise at Junction 17 to 16 involving two HGVs and several cars.

"Highways England just arrived at scene.

"The carriageway is currently blocked."

Highways England estimates at least part of the road will be closed until around 5pm, with traffic conditions returning to normal at 6pm.
