Videogame retailer Game has confirmed it is closing 40 of its stores in 2020 in a rationalisation programme.

But the Adver understands that Swindon’s branch on The Parade is not under threat in the immediate future.

So far this year the retailer has served notices to 27 sites, including ones in Mansfield, Watford, Derby and Glasgow.

A spokesperson for Game said: “We are working closely with landlords throughout the UK to ensure that we do not have to vacate the 40 locations which could lead to a number of job losses.

“However, we are facing a challenging retail market and Game, with its extensive retail footprint, needs to restructure and landlords need to work with us in setting realistic, fair rents.”

The news of Game remaining in Swindon will be a bonus for the town, which saw numerous shops close in the town centre in 2019, including Argos, Morrisons and Thorntons.
