For Royal Mail’s Second Class post, it also managed to exceed its regulatory target, delivering a high 98.8 per cent of this mail within three working days.

The report says Royal Mail has one of the highest-quality service specifications out of any European country.

Some areas of the country did not meet targets with only 57.7 per cent of First Class mail reaching the Hebrides the next working day.

Royal Mail has been a private company since the government sold the last of its shares in 2015.
