FROM emptying bins to maintaining parks, licensing taxis to administering elections, residents will get a greater insight into what Oxford City Council does when the authority takes part in a social media marathon.

The council will be among hundreds nationwide participating online next Tuesday using the hashtag #OurDay to give residents a look at some of the jobs councils do every day.

By the end of last year’s OurDay more than 10,000 Twitter accounts had participated, and the hashtag trended at number one on the social media site for most of the day. It has been organised by the Local Government Association (LGA), which represents councils in England and Wales.

The LGA is encouraging as many local authorities as possible to tell the country what they are up to as part of a 24-hour live social media marathon by using the hashtag #OurDay.

The city council's chief executive Gordon Mitchell said: “We are really pleased to be taking part in OurDay and in doing so highlight the amazing, and sometimes overlooked, work that council staff do for our community.

"We’re looking forward to being part of the OurDay conversation and to hear from residents on Facebook and Twitter.” For more information visit local.gov.uk/our-day.
